The idea for this picture came from the fourth story (or as the Welsh would have it - branch) of the Mabinogion It is a story featuring, wizards, witches, women created from flowers and then turned into owls (the name Blodeuwedd means owl-face), infidelity, murder, rape and ressurection, and lots more.
If you can't read Welsh, or can't stand Lady Charlotte Guest's translation, all four of the Mabinogion's branches have been brilliantly retold by Evangeline Walton (look her up on Wikki), and this story in particular is the basis for Alan Garner's book : The Owl Service.
